History of Zanzibar

Vasco Da Gama (Portuguese) was the first European explorer to arrive in Zanzibar in 1499.  Zanzibar was the most important town of the east coast of Africa.  It was the largest producer of cloves in the world and the largest slaving market on the east coast.  In the 19th century, Zanzibar was the seat of the Omani empire.

Zanzibar attained independence on December 10, 1963.

On April 26, 1964, Zanzibar united with mainland Tanganika to become part of present day United Republic of Tanzania.

Zanzibar’s history has led to a harmonization of  African, Arabian, European and Asian cultures, seen in the language, architecture and people of the island.,
